Topic | The 25 Word Pitch

Most entrepreneurs can speak at length about what they've made and how it works, but are lost when it comes to telling a compelling story about their startup.

This class will help you lay the foundation of your story with a simple and incredibly difficult exercise: The 25 Word Pitch.

Paul Moore, who handles Communications for Start Garden, teaches the class. With a background in filmmaking, branding, design and copywriting, he believes any great brand is a great story. Prior to Start Garden, he was Marketing Director for the first two ArtPrize events and Spout.com, where his weekly podcast--FilmCouch--was nominated for a Webby Award. Prior to that he won two Telly Awards for short films he wrote and directed.

He recently graduated from the Institute of Design with a Masters of Design Methods and can be found at Start Garden most days eating Everidae Sauce on all his food.

Instructor | Paul Moore, Start Garden

Paul loves stories. Every business tells one and some are great. His twenties started in art, then went to filmmaking and wound up in marketing, where he realized all along he was prototyping things he found socially interesting. He’s worked with Rick since 2005 when they started Spout.com, then ArtPrize, and 5×5 Night. As Marketing Director on the original ArtPrize team, he helped launch an event that both enamored and appalled the art world. He recently completed his Masters of Design Methods from the Institute of Design at the Illinois Institute of Technology. You can find Paul in Eastown with his wife, Kristen, and their three kids.

    Topic | Strength Based Leadership

Based on prolific Gallup research, it is clear that each person has the greatest potential for success in his or her specific areas of strength. In fact, research shows that those who use their strengths daily are 6 times more likely to be engaged on the job. Practically speaking, engagement at work means heightened personal and professional productivity, more enthusiasm for work, less stress, greater sense of contribution and value, more growth, more loyal clients, less accidents at work, increase in company profitability. Through an interactive workshop Abbey Coaching will use a strengths-based leadership approach to educate participants on the Strengthsfinders 2.0 ethos and how it is linked to their success and sustainability.
    Participants will leave with:
    1. a greater understanding of why working from their strengths is vital to individual success and sustainability.
    2. a greater understanding of why working from their strengths is vital to team success and sustainability.
    3. practical ways to discern and grow in their strengths.
    4. practical ways to implement an intentional strengths based approach to their current initiatives.

    Your Instructor | Abbey Johnston

Abbey is a Gallup Trained Strengths Coach who has always been unabashedly intrigued by people and their unique qualities. From a young age, she enjoyed people watching and listening to adult conversations about work and life. Abbey's love of people and how they function led her to pursue a bachelor's degree in Psychology from Hope College in Holland, Michigan. She is currently completing a Masters in Communication and Leadership at Gonzaga University.
Abbey's interest in others, her desire to listen, and her unique ability to offer discerning insight gave some the impression that she would become a counselor. However for Abbey, there was a disconnect.
Originally from Indiana, Abbey has lived in Michigan since 1988, with a three year hiatus in Northern Ireland. While there, she developed and co-directed a youth center for disadvantaged at-risk young people and met her husband of ten years, John. She loves a witty sense of humor, travel, being outdoors, meals with friends and anything with peanut butter.

Topic | The Balance Breakthrough Model: Testing Desirability, Feasibility, and Viability

A study conducted by the Management Sciences Institute indicates that 89% of successful new product introductions fit the following criteria:

New, but not too new to the market
New, but not too new technology
Is grounded in real customer needs.

These three criteria form the foundation of what is called the Balanced Breakthrough Model, which was first introduced by business management guru Peter Drucker. It establishes the premise that powerful offerings are those that match what people desire, what is technologically feasible, and what is viable as an ongoing business. Having a ‘balanced’ offering does not necessarily mean that each of these components is equally emphasized but that all are present.

This model provides an ideal structure for teams to generate, organize and prioritize the challenges they must overcome to achieve success on an initiative. Learn how to apply it to your idea to make the most of your resources in the early stages of your journey to deliver it to the world.
